Top 10 Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The Floor

Top 10 Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The Floor

by Gina Valley

We caught Michael Franti and Spearhead live in Hollywood this past weekend.

Awesome experience.

Amazing musicians, great show, and genuinely nice people.  If they’re performing in your neck of the woods, don’t miss it.

But, that wasn’t the only show we saw at The Fonda Theatre that night.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Totally Top 10 Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The FloorA whole different show played out in the lobby, where many of us concert goers enjoyed a lovely beverage and a parade of people to watch.  The Lobby People Watching Show is always fun, and the fun increases as show time nears and beverages take effect.

The unlikely star of this past Saturday night’s Lobby People Watching Show was a bloke none of us knew.  We didn’t realize he was going to steal the Lobby Watching Show when we first saw him duck into the men’s room, drink glass in hand.

He wasn’t the first, nor the last, to take his liquid friend into the facilities with him.  We cringed and giggled at each person who did so.

But, when he emerged from the…uh…Bat Cave…he immediately gave a star worthy performance that we are still giggling (and writing) about.

He strode confidently out of the loo, drink cup still in hand.  He began a commanding march across the lobby, then, suddenly, stumbled just slightly.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Totally Top 10 Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The Floor

I wasn’t watching him very closely, as I didn’t realize he was our Lobby People Watching Show’s hero, but I was fairly certain that when he stumbled, one of the ice cubes flew out of his drink, and onto the carpeted lobby floor.  He immediately, stopped, scooped up what I assumed was the errant cube, and popped it into his mouth.  Then, he strode off into the crowd.

The Professor and I stared at each other, shocked and amazed.

I looked around at the other people nearby, and met eyes with another woman whose face showed she was thinking what I was.

“Did he just eat off the floor?” I asked her, hoping she’d say that I’d been mistaken.

“I think he did,” she replied.

“Was it an ice cube?” I asked.

I hope it was life-saving heart medicine,” she immediately replied.

That’s when I realized I was being very judgmental.  I hadn’t given the guy the benefit of the doubt.  There is any number of logical reasons why he might have popped something from the floor into his mouth.  Well, maybe not all that many logical reasons, but lots of possible reasons…for example…

Top Ten Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The Floor

#10.  Because he is The Orb of the Knowledge of The Universe, and when he sees a little piece of knowledge on the floor, it’s his job to gobble it right up.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Totally Top 10 Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The Floor

#9.  Because he was pretty sure the floor was germ-free since they’d vacuumed before the concert, and 200 people had paraded through and undoubtedly crushed any germs the vacuuming had missed.  So, he felt completely hypoallergenic ingesting his escaped ice cube.

#8.  Because it wasn’t an ice cube.  It was a Tic Tac, and who doesn’t want a Tic Tac?

#7.  Because he was temporarily disoriented by the 200 different lighting fixtures hanging on the walls in the still very dark lobby, and thought he was reaching up to pick an apple, not down to grab ice off of the floor.

#6.  Because it was one of his wisdom teeth that fell out, and he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to remember where he parked his car without it.

#5.  Because one of the Transformers told him the AllSpark (that magical cube the Transformers are all fighting about) was missing, and to hide it if he found it.  So, when he saw it on the floor, he swallowed it for safe keeping.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Totally Top 10 Reasons Why That Guy Just Ate Off The Floor #4.  ‘Cause, you know, 5 second rule.

#3.  Because he saw a little piece of Krypton on the floor, so he ate it to protect Michael Franti, who is, in fact, (Shhh! Don’t tell!) Superman!

#2.  Because he was trying to install iOS7 on his iPhone and he really misunderstood the directions.

#1.  Because it was a Lego piece on the floor, and he popped it into his mouth to protect all of the other concert attenders’ feet.   He’s a super hero, really.

I guess I shouldn’t laugh at him.

I had a lot of trouble installing iOS7, too.

THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young!

THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young!

by Gina Valley

My life always goes according to plan.

I’m just not sure what the plan is, or who made it.

But, I know someone must be planning it.  Stuff doesn’t get this messed up without forethought.  I’m sure of that.  I think.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! I decided to take a nap this morning.  I’d like to say I decided that because I was exhausted.  I haven’t slept through the night for 3 or maybe it was 6205 days, I lost count.  But, truthfully, I obviously decided to take a nap because I’m out of my mind.

I’m a parent.  I know better.  There is no sleep for the weary.  Especially the weary with children.

My pack was all dispersed to its various educational fonts for the day.  Only Son#1 was home, and he was busily, and perhaps most importantly, silently researching a new job (he hates one of the ones he has currently).

I was in my bedroom, staring at our bed, and considering making my half, just to mess with The Professor.

The Professor makes our bed every morning.  Most of the time that makes sense, as I get up hours before he and our offspring do, and I don’t care if the bed is made.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! But, once in a while I will sleep in.  And, by “sleep in” I mean, of course, “oversleep.”  On those mornings, I wake in a panic to the sound of The Professor in our shower, and no sounds of children getting ready for school, and find myself alone in our half made bed.  That’s right, “half made.”

The Professor always makes our bed when he gets up, whether I am still sleeping in it makes no difference to him.  Somehow he manages to smooth and tuck the covers around me, his very light-sleeping wife, without waking or even realizing he should wake me.

So, I was standing there giggling to myself about how confused The Professor would be to come home and find I’d made our bed (dumb stuff seems funny when you’re sleep deprived), when it occurred to me that I had just enough time to take a 90 minute nap.

Realizing that I could get a nap and mess up the bed at the same time was too good an opportunity to miss.  So, I decided to take a nap.  Son#1 had driven carpool for me that morning, so I was still in my jammies, making the transition to napping even easier.

I needed to be up in time for an important conference call, so before I lay down I was careful to set the alarm on my phone to wake me up in 90 minutes.  I’ve overslept and woke up holding my phone  before, because I dozed off before setting that alarm. This time I completed the process while still vertical.  Not my first time at this rodeo.

My plan to wake up securely secured, I snuggled deep into the covers, and prepared to board the plane to Dreamland.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! Naturally, this triggered some sort of disturbance in the universe, and somebody’s dog started to bark.  I waited, hoping the owner would take care of whatever need his furry friend had, but the barking continued.

10 minutes into my planned time of blissful slumber, that canine continued to maddeningly yap away.  It seemed to get closer and closer the harder I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to ignore it.  It almost sounded like it was in our backyard.

Suddenly, my eyes popped open.  I’d had an epiphany.

It was in our backyard.

It was our girl puppy.

As offspring are apt to be, Son#1 is completely immune to annoying sounds, such as a puppy barking at a door 20 feet away from him.  I provided him a gentle, motherly nudge by screaming, “Let the puppy in!”

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! I heard the door open and close, signaling that our cute, crazy canine had re-entered our abode, where she would undoubtedly be happy and silent for the duration of my now 80 minutes of nap time.  Oddly, the memory of her yapping continued to replay in my head, keeping me from boarding that ever waiting flight to Dreamland.

I was unable to figure out why I couldn’t get that sound out of my mind, until I realized she was still barking.  Again, I provided Son#1 with an ever-so-gentle reminder that our puppy was behaving in a less than totally nap inducing manner.  I screeched, “What is the matter with you?!?!  I’m trying to sleep.  Shut her up!!!”  And, then, I politely added, “Please,” because I’m sure that cancelled out the memory of my screaming tizzy.

I was then treated to a Son#1/girl puppy duet.  She would bark.  He would holler.  She would yap.  He would cajole.  She would growl.  He would order.  She would whine.  He would bribe.  Then, they would repeat the entire overture.

I’m not sure who gave up first, but eventually all was quiet on the downstairs front.  I could almost feel the steps leading up to the door of the plane to Dreamland under my feet.  A quick glance at the clock told me that my flight would have to be a maximum of 50 minutes long, but I knew each of those 50 minutes would be glorious.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! Apparently, I boarded that plane in record time because when I was thrown off it by my ringing phone, I saw that less than 10 minutes had elapsed.   As I saw it was Daughter#1’s school calling, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that my first thought was “Someone better be bleeding from the head.”

They weren’t.

Daugher#1 was apparently suffering from a rapid onset headache, which the fully awake me would have realized was in fact an “I hate history and don’t want to go” headache.

But, the sleep deprived, still groggy me failed to make the proper evaluation (bogus headache) or to give the proper message (“haul your about-to-be-grounded-rear to history class before you miss one more minute of it, or I’m going to post that picture you hate so much of you dressed as a ninja flamingo on your Facebook page AND dedicate it to that guy you have a crush on”).

I heard someone who sounded just like me answering my daughter, “Ok, honey.  I’ll come pick you up.”

After I hung up, I realized that I, in my old flannel jammies, with my out of control hair, looked more like a mad scientist than a responsible person listed on my daughter’s approved pick up from school list.  Fortunately for me, Son#1 was dressed for the day, possesses a valid driver’s license, and is also on my daughter’s approved pick up from school list.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! I hollered down the stairs that I would give him a million dollars or buy him lunch if he would please go pick up his sister for me.  He decided to go with the lunch.

I decided to go back to finish my nap.  I still had nearly 40 minutes of napping possible.  That’s like 2 of those 20 minute power naps Oprah or Dr. Phil or somebody recommends.

I was just slipping into that semi-conscious, pre-sleep mode when my phone rang.

I may have growled.

That may have scared the puppy, who had followed me up to my room, and settled on the floor at the foot of our bed. She may have knocked over a stack of The Professor’s books as she raced out of our room.

It was Daughter#1 calling.  She was with Son#1 in the parking lot of her school.  She wanted to know if I could come pick her up, because Son#1’s car had a flat tire and she didn’t want to “just sit there” while he changed it.

I told her that she did not have to “just sit there,” because she was welcome to either help him, or to walk the 3 miles home.  Totally her choice.

She was not happy with her choices.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young! I told her to put her brother on the phone.  When she did, I suggested he call the auto club to have them change the tire.  He said that it’d be faster to do it himself.

I did not care who changed the tire.  I just wanted to sleep.  I was tired.  And, I was rapidly running out of napping minutes.  I still had 30 minutes.  I flopped down on my pillow, preparing to board for a quick jaunt to Dreamland.

I swear my head had not even hit the pillow when my phone rang again.  I don’t know if I growled.  I might have.  The puppy was long gone.  I’m sure I at least whimpered.

Son#1 was calling to tell me that he was done changing the tire.  That would have been great news, if the reason he was done had been because the tire was changed.  But, it wasn’t.   He was done because 2 of the wheel bolts had sheared off.

He’d called the auto club, and he was wondering which mechanic to have his car towed to, as even the auto club guy couldn’t get the bolts off.

I texted him the address to give the auto club tow truck driver, and told him that I’d pick them up at the mechanic’s.

I looked wistfully at my clock, and saw that I still had 20 minutes before my nap, which had never really started, was scheduled to end.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Naps Teenagers THIS Is Why Some Animals Eat Their Young!

I quickly dressed, and raced to the mechanic’s, hoping to get there before them, partly to handle the details and partly in hopeless pursuit of a 5 minute nap in my car.

Predictably, the tow truck pulled up as soon as I reclined my seat.

After I’d finished talking with the mechanic, my kids followed me back to my car, with its seemingly decadent 4 functioning wheels.

Thoughts of a nap were just a distant memory then.  I’d even had to push back my conference call, due to my meet up with the tow truck.

As we walked, Daughter#1 said to me, “Your eyes look really red and puffy, Mom.  You should take a nap.”

This is why some animals eat their young.

You’re Not You When You’re Hungry

You’re Not You When You’re Hungry

by Gina Valley

We’ve all seen that Snickers’ commercial.

“You’re not you when you’re hungry…”

Last night I was not me.

I had a major case of the whinies.

I did not want to ride in the stupid car down the stupid freeway.  I did not want to walk through the stupid village to the stupid restaurant, which would probably take too long and make us late to the stupid concert.

I did not want a stupid basket of bread, because all those stupid carbs would spoil our stupid dinner, but my husband told the stupid waiter, “Yes,” when he asked if we wanted any.

I was not me, and I didn’t even know it.

A basket of bread appeared on our table.  I put a piece on my bread plate, just to be polite.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley You’re Not You When You’re Hungry Snickers Hungry

Then, I noticed it smelled heavenly, so, just to be polite, I took a bite.  It was the freshest, most buttery focaccia I have ever tasted.  Before I knew what I was doing, I’d inhaled my piece, and was reaching for a second.  I thanked our waiter, who was “Scott,” and not at all stupid.

I realized that this yummy focaccia was the first thing I’d had to eat the entire day, and, what with it being 7:30PM, I, obviously, was very hungry.  And, I was not me.

You know it’s not just me and the Snickers people who think our whole attitude changes when we’re hungry.  Even The Big Guy agrees.

I remember reading somewhere in the Old Testament where Elijah (one of the prophets, who had just been enabled to do a boat load of miracles) had a major case of the whinies (i.e. he actually prayed to die because someone one was being mean to him), and God said, “Dude, chill out and have a Snickers,” (ok, maybe I’m paraphrasing a bit.  I think he actually gave him a loaf of bread and jar of water and a nap.  But, they didn’t have Snickers back then, or I’m sure he would have dropped a few of those down).

As I finished my second piece of focaccia and started on my minestrone soup, I realized we weren’t in a tiny, loud, crowded dive.  We were in a quaint, lively bistro.

The walk back to the car was not long and through a rundown neighborhood, as it had been on the way to the restaurant.  It was a short stroll through an eclectic village filled with interesting shops and restaurants to window shop as we sauntered the short distance back to our car.

Isn’t it amazing how our attitude can change when we’re hungry?

It’s especially amazing to me that I’m not even usually aware of the change being hungry can make in me.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley You’re Not You When You’re Hungry Snickers Hungry

I wonder how many international incidents have been caused by diplomats simply being too hungry.  I wonder if the whole national government shut down here in the United States could have been avoided if someone would have passed out some coffee and sandwiches.  Or, some of that magical focaccia I had?

But, I think knowing we aren’t ourselves when we’re hungry has much greater implications than just the way physical hunger affects us.  I think a hungry soul is a much greater problem.

A hungry soul becomes discouraged and frustrated and bitter easily.

We aren’t ourselves when our soul hungers.  It’s a deeper problem than physical hunger, but often feeding our soul is as simple as feeding our body.

When we speak of soul hunger we often think of time in prayer and reading the Bible, both of which are nourishing in unique ways.  But, I think our world is made of things to fill our soul.  I think that’s one reason those things are here with us.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley You’re Not You When You’re Hungry Snickers HungryBeautiful mountains and seashores feed my soul.  A walk with my kids feeds my soul.  Reading and writing and laughing feed my soul.  Finding the solution to a problem and developing plans feed my soul.

So many parts of life drain us, feed on us, so to speak.  We have to be careful to make sure that we’re engaged in activities that feed us, as well.

One of the biggest things in life is work.  If our work is only draining us, not bringing us joy or satisfaction, it’s time to reevaluate.  We spend too much time at work to allow it to be a sink hole that sucks us dry.

That doesn’t mean we need to quit and find a new job, although it might.  It means we need to look at our job and figure out how we can make it challenging, joy inspiring, interesting.   Sometimes even a job we love, even if that “job” is fulltime parenting, can lose its luster.  We have to find new ways to do it, new ways to make a difference, new ways to encourage others.

No matter where we are, if we’re hungry, we must make sure we’re fed.  That’s the only way we can truly be who we are.  We owe it to our families, our coworkers, ourselves.

Make sure “you are you”.

Love!

Top 10 Reasons You Should Pass Me The Chocolate

Top 10 Reasons You Should Pass Me The Chocolate

by Gina Valley

It wasn’t Easter.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Top 10 Reasons You Should Pass Me The Chocolate

It wasn’t Valentine’s Day.

It wasn’t even Casual Friday.

But, nonetheless, this day called for chocolate.  It dang near screamed for it.

Here’s a few of the most notable pushes toward chocolate-dom.  Maybe you have a few to add to the list.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Pass Me The Chocolate

#10.  Because I decided to have my 18 year old drive us to soccer so I could check his driving skills finesse level, and I found out they would need to be better just to be bad.

#9.  Because a client suggested the very same changes to me that he turned down when I suggested them to him 2 months ago.

#8.  Because I forgot to make dinner, and chocolate is brown, so I assume I can count it as a protein

#7.  Because someone forgot his cellphone again & we needed to make a post-soccer urgent care run again & I couldn’t reach him without calling the department secretary again & she asked me “Have you tried his cell phone?” as though I’m a moron, again.

#6.  Because our boy puppy can now open every door in our house – cupboards, refrigerator, rooms, front, back – every door.

#5.  Because I thought I was going blind, but I’d just put my glasses on over my contact lenses.

#3.  Because I found my missing 4 inch black patent leather pumps on my daughter’s feet, at her school, in the principal’s office, after I received a phone call requiring me to come to the school to deal with a dress code violation, which, by the way, they were.

#2.  Because my 13 year old has decided to get all of his sassing for the year done this week.

#1.  Because someone brought the carton of milk home from their school lunch on Friday, left it in our van, and it exploded this afternoon while I was on the freeway running late to an important meeting.

So, pass the chocolate, and back slowly away.

That way no one will get hurt.

Maybe.

Laugh Out Loud!

It’s been very windy in Southern California this weekend.

These high winds make me think of Mary Poppins.

My kids love that movie.  Even my teens are captivated by it, although they won’t admit it. But, their staying seated in the room while it’s on, and telling our littles to be quiet reveals their motives.

When I think of Mary Poppins, I think of “…a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…” (even as I type that I hear the song in my head).

“Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…”

Works for me.

Works for work.

Works for my kids.

Lately, the busyness of my life has caused me to forget to add the “sugar” when I’m doling out “medicine” throughout the various areas of my life.

The medicine of heading to the gym goes down much easier with the sugar of a couple peppy, new tunes move to & a new workout shirt.

My children receive the medicine of my corrections much more readily when they first receive the sugar of at least 3 praises.

When I include the sugar of verbalized gratitude to my assistants, the medicine that is my detailed instructions to them is much easier for them to accept and follow.

I’m a straight-forward, suck-it-up, get-it-done, no-nonsense, dive-in kind of person.  Sometimes in my zeal to get through the mountain of work that must be completed I forget that taking time to include that spoonful of sugar not only gets the work done more quickly, but also makes it much more rewarding for everyone.

There’s never enough “sugar” in the world. Take time to sprinkle it liberally.

Love!

What kind of “sugar” helps you the most when it is time to take your “medicine”?  How do you sweeten up the “medicine” in your life?  Shoot me a comment.  I’m looking forward to hearing all about it.
