Top 10 Great Things About My Kids Helping Make Dinner

Top 10 Great Things About My Kids Helping Make Dinner

by Gina Valley

My kids are helping make dinner tonight.

Right now 12 and 13 are browning meat for tacos.

Yes, I made sure the fire extinguishers are ready to go.  No, I haven’t had a nervous breakdown.  Yet.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley 10 Great Things About My Kids Helping Make DinnerI’m trying to smile and to remain positive.  I think I’m actually grimacing and developing an aneurysm.

When I decided to insist that my children start helping more with the day to day needs of our family, I forgot that meant that I’d need to face the results of my children helping with the day to day needs of our family.

They’re still learning.  Having them more deeply involved in the processes that keep our home running has lots of far reaching effects.  It teaches them responsibility.  It reminds them about the efforts made on their behalf.  It’s raising my blood pressure.

Plus, there are some clear benefits to having my progeny help make our evening meal.

10 Great Things About My Kids Helping Make Dinner

#10.  Mystery ingredients keep your mind sharp.

#9.  No stress about washing the pots and pans.  You have to wash the whole kitchen anyway.  A couple metal vessels pale in comparison to that.  Might have to wash the whole downstairs.  One time, they even trashed our van while browning meat for tacos.  I’m still trying to figure out how that happened.

#8.  No serving dish necessary.  The food is already “artfully” presented all over the stove, counter, floor, and ceiling.

#7.  The dog has been fed.  Repeatedly.

#6.  You have no trouble limiting your serving size, as you wonder how many body parts were scratched during the dinner creation process.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley 10 Great Things About My Kids Helping Make Dinner#5.  It will qualify you to be an excellent candidate to appear on Kitchen Impossible or Dr. Phil.

#4.  It’s a great time to inventory your kitchen, as every cupboard and drawer, as well as the refrigerator and freezer, will be left open for easy analysis.

#3.  Dinner conversation will be effortless.  Between the I made this!’s and the What is this?’s all conversational opportunities will be filled.

#2.  Your kitchen floor will have a new, decorative design, and permanent non-slip surface.

#1.  The following day your spouse will be much more likely to utter those three little words you so long to hear: Let’s eat out.

Maybe I’ll just have a cup of tea.

Sound Of Silence…Not! …Gina’s Favorites

Sound Of Silence…Not! …Gina’s Favorites

by Gina Valley

I’ve been very distracted today, so I figured my Sound Of Silence…Not! post would be perfect for Throwback Day today.  Granted, our puppies are doing most of the distracting for me today, but this post about my boys’ antics still hits home.
Enjoy the laughs in this Gina’s Favorites.

Sound Of Silence…Not!

It’s really just the words that interfere with a read through.

Some noise is ok, but I can’t have any talking around me while I’m doing a final read through on a piece.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Sound Of Silence…Not! …Gina’s Favorites Kids' Point of View, Working At Home It was only my boys and me for the afternoon.

We had great plans for fun.

But, first I had to finish a little work.

Which meant they couldn’t talk.

But just for 2 minutes.  Ok, probably 5 minutes.  15 minutes, at the outside, really.

Just long enough for me to do the final edit on a piece I had to send out before the fun could begin.

I knew better than to disappear into the silent confines of my office to quickly perform the needed operation.  My sons roaming unsupervised while I edited meant one of them would likely need an operation, or at least a ride to the ER when I emerged.  So, I carried my laptop into our family room.

I told my boys they had to be quiet so I could do a final read through.  Then, I amended that and told them they just needed not to talk for 2 minutes, maybe 5 while I read through the piece.

It’s really just the words that interfere with a read through.

As they weren’t to talk, they readily understood that I would not be talking either.  Not their first time running this drill.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Sound Of Silence…Not! …Gina’s Favorites Kids' Point of View, Working At HomeMy laptop and I took up residence on the family room sofa, affording me the most complete view of the lower level of our house possible.  My sons set about amusing themselves and attempting to break through the boundary that would cause mom to stop working and holler, sort of a progeny quest on their part, as it were.

After a couple of minutes with the three youngest engaged in an exercise in pantomimed “I’m Not Touching You!” Son#4, my youngest son, went into the loo to …uh… take care of some personal needs.

Son#2 Immediately grabbed a balloon from the junk drawer in our kitchen (ok, from one of many, many junk drawers in our kitchen because they’re all junk drawers, but that’s really a subject for a different column!), and proceeded to quietly blow it up while he hid outside the door to the loo to, I assumed (not my first time running this drill either), be prepared to ambush Son#4 upon his egress from the loo.

Noting this development, Son#3, stifling giggles, hid around the corner from the end of the short corridor leading to the loo to prepare to ambush Sons #2 and #4 when they came out.

Right then, Son#1 walked through our family room en route to our kitchen, saw the developing ambush chain, and proclaimed to his younger brothers, “You’re stupid!” Obviously not a nice thing to say, but I have to admit the emotionless, analytical tone Son#1, my eldest off-spring, used made me involuntarily giggle.

At the sound of Son#1’s voice, the son in the loo, Son#4, opened the door to ask what was said.  The instant Son#4 opened the door Son#2 yelled and popped the balloon, causing Son#4 to yell in surprise.  Then, both laughed so hard they fell down.  They were literally rolling on the floor laughing!

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Sound Of Silence…Not! …Gina’s Favorites Kids' Point of View, Working At HomeWhen they’d regained their composure, well, at least had quelled their laughter enough so they’d regained the ability to walk, Sons #4 & #2 made the short trek down the corridor.  When they reached the end of it, Son#3 was waiting to ambush them.  Son#3 yelled, startling them.  All 3 then fell into fits of laughter, whooping and hollering with tears streaming from the silliness.

I have to admit I joined them.  Even often somber Son#1 had a smile.  It was like watching my very own 3 Stooges, but without the eye poking.  I was sure that would come later in the evening.

Through it all, neither Moe, Larry, nor Curly uttered a word, so as not to disturb the read through I was supposed to be doing.

Son#3’s tear streaked, smiling face turned to me.  “Are you done, mom?” he asked, still giggling.

“Uh…almost,” I fibbed.  I hadn’t even started!  I was too distracted by the show.

Maybe it’s not just the words that interfere with a read through!

Is Brown The New Black?

Is Brown The New Black?

by Gina Valley

We have the world’s ugliest ceiling fan.

Check the book. I’m sure we’re in there.

It’s really more of a “dangling precariously” fan, than an actual ceiling fan.  It’s hanging in our entryway, nowhere near the 16 foot ceiling.  It seems to be slowly heading toward the floor at a rate of an inch or two a year.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Is Brown The New Black? DIYAnd, it doesn’t even “fan.”  The chain that should hang down to allow us to turn on the fan part apparently got caught on the fan, wrapped around the works and embedded itself into the mechanism in a hopelessly non-removable way.  The only time this fan spins is when it’s pelted with an errant football pass or a soccer ball header.

It has a light fixture underneath that does provide some light in our dark entry way.  Sometimes as many as 2 of its 5 tiny bulbs light completely at the same time.  It’s not exactly blinding illumination.  It’s more on the scale of a bathroom nightlight.  But, less dependable.

Last week the fan’s pilgrimage toward the floor reached such an extent that the green and red wires connecting it to the electrical supply, and I’m guessing the only thing tethering it to the ceiling at this point, became visible.

Much as I appreciated the festive addition to our holiday décor, my patience with the fan’s ugliness, uselessness, and now possibly “gonna-shock-us-all-ness” had reached its end.

The Professor “sensed” my displeasure, i.e. heard me making up new cuss words in describing the electrical behemoth to my neighbor while asking for the number of her electrician.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Is Brown The New Black? DIY

My dear husband then told me that I didn’t need to call an electrician.  He would change the fixture himself, something he clearly thought I would find helpful and reassuring.  I instead found it to be a good reason to quickly put the electrician’s number into speed dial, right next to the emergency room’s number.

“I’ll take out the fan, and have the new fixture up before lunchtime,” he announced this morning in a manner much too cheerful for an amateur electrician.

“What new fixture?” I asked.

“The one you picked out,” he replied.

I didn’t recall having gone to the home improvement store for a new fixture.

“Remember?” he continued.  “You said that you hated the fan, and you showed me which chandelier to order to replace it,” he reminded me.

“That was 10 years ago, when we moved in,” I reminded him.

“Really?  That long?  Well, I saw it in a big box in the garage.  It’ll be up today,” he said confidently.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Is Brown The New Black? DIY

I was not feeling confident. In fact, I figured he would get distracted by our hectic life and forget all about it.

I’d just call an electrician later.  The Professor probably wouldn’t even notice.  Home décor is not really his thing.

My youngest asked me what the new fixture looked like.  I couldn’t remember which chandelier I’d decided on way back then. I knew I’d narrowed it down to two: black wrought iron to match our staircase balusters or a nickel-silver color to match our door hardware.  “I’m not sure,” I told him.  “But, I know it’s either black or silver.”
Lo and behold, after a mere 10 hours and a few minor shocks, and despite a ladder mishap which is deserving of a column all its own, the fan was gone, and in its place there was a glowing light fixture.

“Mom?” my youngest said to me, looking up at the glowing metal tangle.  “That’s not black.”

“No,” I said.

“And, it’s not silver,” he continued.

“No, it isn’t,” I agreed.

“So, what is that?” he asked.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Is Brown The New Black? DIY

“Well,” I whispered to him, as I looked up at an enormous brown chandelier. “That is the ugly chandelier from the house we lived in before this one.”

“What’s it doing here?” he asked.

“It was supposed to be left with the recycling when we moved. Ten years ago.  Something tells me it wasn’t.”

“It’s really ugly, mom.  And, I think there’s spiders coming out of it,” he added as he stepped further away from the huge, brown, metal monstrosity.

I’ll just call an electrician later.

The Professor probably wouldn’t even notice the change.

Home décor is not really his thing.

It’s Friday.

End of the week.

Start of the weekend.

This week the cold has set in deep, particularly in the north and east. Granted, it’s been warm and sunny here in SoCal, but I’m still sympathetic to the plight of you all who are shivering.

Nothing warms the heart like a good laugh, so wrap up in a blanket and grab some hot cocoa (Irish it up, if you’d like), because it’s time to get your giggle on.

WHAT Is The Dog Sniffing Now?!?! …Gina’s Favorites

by Gina Valley

I love how kids see fun in stuff that seems like anything but fun to me.  They totally lose themselves in simple things and find hidden joy there.  I love that!

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley WHAT Is The Dog Sniffing Now?!?! ...Gina's Favorites FocusWhen we had a new flushing mechanism installed in the toilet in our powder room my little ones were thrilled.  It sounds like a jet. They were flushing that thing every ten minutes just for fun.  I’ll be thrilled when they are flushing as regularly after making a deposit.

And, they think cleaning out the attic is a grand adventure.  I’d prefer a root canal. A big mud puddle in our yard and my pack will be busy and giggling all day.  I will be out buying extra bleach.

We just don’t see things quite the same way.  And, I’m glad.  They can still see magic and fun that I miss now.  Fortunately, they remind me how to be totally immersed in excitement about simple things.

Just this afternoon I gave 5 of my pack permission to go run the dog at the park near our house.  They were thrilled.  Running the dog is a treat for them.  It’s torture for me.

When I run the dog, I assume that the dog, who is quite capable of running 10 times faster and further than I am, will run.  And, that is exactly what happens.  For exactly the first 30 seconds, right up until the 100 pound dog sees a leaf or a squirrel or a shadow, or just thinks he sees a leaf or a squirrel of a shadow.  Then, he takes off full speed, dragging me behind, after the aforementioned object.  For about 30 seconds.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley WHAT Is The Dog Sniffing Now?!?! ...Gina's Favorites Focus

Then, he will think he sees a leaf or a squirrel or a shadow by his feet that he simply must sniff, and grinds instantly to a halt, causing me to either crash into or have to attempt to jump over him.  Did I mention that he is 100 pounds of canine ADHD?

And, so it goes.  30 second bursts of insane speed on his part, being dragged on mine, followed by 30 seconds of sniffing some invisible object that only he can see.  Then, we repeat the cycle cruising around the park, alternating between light speed and no speed, meeting and greeting every leaf, squirrel, lizard, and tree, real or imagined.  I can’t stand that.

My kids love that.  They like to meet and greet every leaf, squirrel, lizard, and tree, too.  And, the dog, who in general displays idiot-like qualities while out with me, is gentle and sweet and protective with our children. He drags me.  He trots along carefully with them.

Today having been a beautiful, breezy summer day my kids were even more excited about the prospect of delving into the park’s flora and fauna with their 4-footed furry friend.

They had their shoes and socks on and were squealing and running out the front door like a herd of buffalo in record time.  They nearly ran down The Professor as he made the mistake of attempting to come in the front door as they stampeded out.

As the dust settled and the din subsided, The Professor asked me, “What’s their hurry?  They didn’t even say ‘Hello.’”

“They’re so excited about running the dog that they can’t think of anything else,” I explained.

“When do you suppose they’ll  be back?” he asked.

“I don’t think they’ll be gone more than 2 or 3 minutes,” I told him.

“Only 2 or 3 minutes?  Why’s that?” he asked slowly, displaying his usual trepidation as he asked about what our kids were up to.  He so frequently wishes he hadn’t asked what our kids are up to after he finds out what they are up to.  No worries this time, though.

“Because,” I said, pointing toward the large black lump sleeping on the rug, “they forgot the dog.”

Stupid Fun Stuff I Do With My Kids

Stupid Fun Stuff I Do With My Kids

by Gina Valley

You’re never closer to cardiac arrest than when you realize your child is about to describe you from his or her point of view to other people.

This week I overheard my daughter describing the roles of her dad and I in her life.

“My dad?  He takes us to the dentist.  My mom?  She tells the jokes.”

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Stupid Fun Stuff I Do With My Kids It’s a strange, hold your breath, pray for the best sensation waiting to hear what your child will say about you.  In this case, I was happy with what I heard.  Every time I make my kids laugh, to me, that’s a win.  And, I really do hate going to the dentist.

I like that my kids see me as a source of humor.  I spend a lot of time crafting humor as my job, but sharing humor with my children is much more important to me.

I have never found parenting to be easy.  It’s simple, yes: be the grown up, do what’s best for them, set appropriate boundaries.  But, easy?  No.  Rarely, maybe never, easy.

We’ve had very difficult moments, painful times, tough realities to deal with.  I suppose every family does.  And, being able to grab a little breath of fresh air by laughing about something has often made tremendously heavy loads bearable.

I try to make sure we laugh every day, and I’m not above using cheap tricks and bad jokes to do it.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Stupid Fun Stuff I Do With My Kids We make fake poop and leave it in places to freak people out.  I’ve taught my kids to employ a variety of mediums when working in the poop genre.  Brownies, chocolate sprinkles, melted chocolate, a perfectly shaped wooden stick, and, of course, the every resilient Tootsie Roll are all in our pot of tricks. Pun intended.

We’ve left creations for grandma and grandpa, their dad, friends, neighbors, even many of them.  It’s a hoot.  Fake poop is always good for a laugh.

We share a joke of the day.  Anyone can come up with it.  The cheesier the better.  I have a joke about a time traveler that I don’t even have to tell anymore.  If I just say “Time traveler says” I’m met with a chorus of giggles and groans. When my youngest son’s band teacher started their first class with a joke, my son instantly thought of him as family.

We laugh about my irrational fears.  Monkeys, clowns, and spiders freak me out, and, not only have I been honest with my kids about that, I encourage them to make light of it, in a kind way.

We laugh about my OCD.  I like the forks sorted by size.  I hang coats by age.  My shoes have to point the same way in the closet.  I hate touching cheese puffs. My goofiness is an endless source of giggles.

We short sheet beds.  If you haven’t taught your kids to do this, get on it.  It’s a life skill everyone needs to have.

When we leave a hotel room, after putting the towels in a neat pile and the trash in the can, we arrange the covers so it looks like someone is still in bed.  We stick Post It notes with messages under the toilet seat for the cleaning people, such as “We enjoyed our stay here.  This place is filled with class.  Thank you for keeping it clean and fresh and lovely for our…”  Well, you get the idea.  Yes, we leave a tip.

We toilet paper anyone who falls asleep on the sofa.  If a sound sleeper and barefoot, he or she might wake with painted toenails, as well.

I will turn on loud party music and we will take a 3 minute Dance Party break, for no particular reason,.

I will suddenly holler, “Oh my gosh we’re late! Quick! Get in the car!” for no reason whatsoever.  Then, after everyone has rushed out and buckled up, we’ll go back in our house and have ice cream for dinner, or head out to a silly movie.

When someone leaves the table to go to the restroom at a restaurant, we’ll switch tables.  If the movie isn’t going to start for a while, we’ll do that at the movie theater, too.

The first question I ask each child after we have been apart is “What funny or weird thing happened today?  Did anyone fall down?”  I’ll never forget when my now 17 year old son was only 10 and uncharacteristically ran full speed out to my waiting car after school. He threw open the door and burst out with, “Somebody fell down today!!!”  His friend, Ryan, had slipped on a dropped squid part during a science dissection.  He was unhurt, but slimed.  We still laugh about it.

Humor Funny Humorous Family Life Love Laugh Laughter Parenting Mom Moms Dad Dads Parenting Child Kid Kids Children Son Sons Daughter Daughters Brother Brothers Sister Sisters Grandparent Grandma Grandpa Grandparents Grandfather Grandmother Parenting Gina Valley Stupid Fun Stuff I Do With My Kids We make it a point to take pictures of goofy things and to show them to each other.  My older kids have cell phones and iPods now, so we send each other goofy pictures in text messages.  But, even my youngest charges know to grab the nearest camera or phone when the dog is snoring, we pass a sign that says “Haircuts While You Wait,” or a squirrel has its head stuck into a pumpkin.

And, speaking of pictures, we take lots of silly ones on purpose.  Every time we take a formal “Everybody look at me and try to look happy” kind of picture, we follow it up with a “Do something funny” shot.  Those are often the best pictures of the whole photo shoot.

I think I got the whole “Share Laugh With Your Kids” thing from my parents.  My mom used to include us kids in playing jokes on my dad.  She’d let us help pack plastic fruit in his lunches, or help us fill the cookie jar with dog biscuits for an after dinner surprise.  She’d fib to us all day on April Fools’ Day.  And, she still puts a rock amongst the baked potatoes every time she serves them.

Of course, what goes around comes around.

When we drove away from my parents’ house after our last visit, I giggled thinking about the realistic-looking poop sculpture we’d left on their bed.  I was sure they’d be expecting a parting joke.  But they have a new puppy, so I knew we’d have them going for a while with that one.

The family that laughs together, lasts together.

Seriously Today – We’ll Be Laughing Out Loud!

Seriously Today – We’ll Be Laughing Out Loud!

Sometimes parenting is hard.  Actually, most of the time.

It’s often satisfying.  We’re usually glad we chose to do it, happy we have kids.  But, it’s usually long on responsibility and short on fun.  Even the fun is a lot of work.  At the end of the day, sometimes, looking back, we’re just glad it’s the end of the day.  A lot of times, really.

Parenting is exhausting and heavy.  Worth it, but exhausting and heavy.

Wouldn’t it be nice to lighten the load?

I think the best days of parenting are the days when we laugh.  That doesn’t mean there aren’t serious moments, life-impacting moments.  It just means there was a spoonful of sugar with that medicine.

I’ve found that laughs can be far between in parenting unless we parents plan for them, especially in our culture of busyness.

Around our house I think of it as “planned spontaneity.”  Opportunities for we parents to do silly, fun, non-productive things with our children.  Doing something together with a purpose does draw parents and children together.  BUT, doing something together simply to laugh together cements that relationship.  I think this becomes even more important as our children grow into teens and young adults.

This Thursday, I get to talk about that:  laughing with our kids, and how to do more of it, especially for dads, as they often have less time with their children.

I don’t get nervous, but if I did get nervous, I’d be nervous.  I have the honor of guest hosting #DadChat this week, while Bruce Sallan, #DadChat’s founder, is traveling. Our topic is: Laugh Out Loud at #DadChat

Please come hang out with me this Thursday, January 9, at 9PM Eastern/6PM Pacific. We’ll chat for an hour.

Everyone is welcome: dads, moms, aunts, uncles, kids, puppies, everyone.

Please consider this your official engraved invitation.

I’m looking forward to hearing what you and your family do to laugh together.

What do/did you do that always gets/got a laugh from kids (yours or others)?

What do you remember your p

arents doing when you were a child that made you giggle?

What did you and your friends do to get a laugh as kids?

Who is the Laugh Whisperer in your family?

How can you encourage your children to find more joy?

How do you turn that frown upside down?

Why did the chicken cross the road?

What is the favorite joke around your home?

It’s going to be a fun discussion. We’ll all take away some new ideas about ways to laugh more with our kids and to bring out more joy in our lives.

If you’re on Twitter, you can easily join in by searching #DadChat this Thursday, January 9, at 9PM Eastern/6PM Pacific.  I’ll be on 15 minutes before then.

I’m looking forward to hanging out with you and to sharing laughs and ideas for more of them.

And, I appreciate your support.

See you Thursday!
