Pain and joy
So closely linked
Words of wisdom
Often inked
Hope and wonder
Now fill in
Where emptiness
Had just been
Pain is heavy
Absence felt
Continuing wondering
At how it’s dealt
Moments held
Sweet and glowing,
Ever fragrant
Always knowing
Delicious remembrances
Confessions of love
Realigned priorities
Strengthened from above
Dark now
Lighter tomorrow
When beautiful memories
Will temper our sorrow

Many experiences are universal, and it is these universal things in life that bring us all together and offer the greatest hope for all of us and our world. Joy, sadness, laughter, loss, beginnings, ends, love. All universal. As one of our dogs finishes her time on this earth I can clearly see that our whole family, even our other pets, are deeply moved by her plight. It makes me sad and hopeful at the same time.
How have these universal truths affected you? Have they helped you draw closer to those you don’t understand? Have they helped you understand you better, or perhaps to put up with your prickly neighbor or relative more patiently?
Shoot me a comment. I’m looking forward to hearing all about it.

Janine Huldie says:
Beautiful poem Gina and sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. I too have had more fair share of losses over the course of 35 years. I have tried my best in these losses to grow from these losses and learn from them, too. The worst losses I experienced were that of my grandparents. It truly did take me time to get past the losses and in the end I still miss them dearly, but thank god for my husband and kids (they truly get me through it all).
gina valley says:
Thank you, Janine. I appreciate your sympathy.
I’m so sorry about the loss of your grandparents. That is very difficult to deal with. I am glad that your husband and kids were able to help you through it. I know I wish my grandparents were around to see my kids growing up. I still miss them, too.
Cari Lorine says:
Losing pets and family are extremely difficult. I’m so sorry for your loss, Gina. Your poem was beautiful and is a great message for anyone who’s experienced loss. Like Janine, my hardest loss has been my grandparents, and it took time and family to get me through it.
